Jaffer pleads guilty to careless driving

Drug, drunk driving charges against former MP get dropped

Former Edmonton MP Rahim Jaffer pleaded guilty to careless driving in an Ontario court on Tuesday and was fined $500 for the offence. Jaffer, who is married to federal Minister of State for the Status of Women Helena Guergis, was stopped for speeding in Palgrave, Ont. last September and charged with cocaine possession and drunk drinking. The speeding, drunk driving and drug charges were withdrawn. “I’m sure you can recognize a break when you see one,” Judge Doug Maund told Jaffer.

    Well, turns out the judge in the case, Doug Maund is a long-time Tory:

    When Brian Mulroney was prime minister, Maund was the chief of staff to Mulroney's health minister Perrin Beatty.

    He backed Kim Campbell in the leadership race to succeed Mulroney
    He was appointed to the Ontario bench in October, 2000 by the Ontario attorney general of the day, none other than current federal finance minister Jim Flaherty.

    Rahim Jaffer's radio ad in the last general election :

    "Edmontonians understand how difficult it is to make sure our children make the right choices, especially on serious issues like drug use. The Conservative Party supports drug-free schools and getting tough with drug dealers who sell illegal drugs to children. Don't let our schools go up in smoke. On Oct. 14, vote Conservative."

    He isnt in cabinet. I remember Margaret Trudeau got off with a drunk driving ticket,, also not in cabinet.How about teddy Kennedy , drove drunk killed a lady and didnt even have a ticket .The Ontario provincial judicial system should be looked at

      Did Margaret Trudeau or Ted Kennedy campaign on a tough-on-crime platform? Were they members of our "the Party's Over" CPC who prefer incarceration over rehabilitation for the drug offenses of the non-affiliated? Clue: the answer to both is NO.

    And here lies the end of the Conservative party movement, pushing to eliminate plea bargains…I think?…Stephen Harper isn't' still going to chastise plea bargains as a "Liberal" thing is he?…No, not even he is that stupid, is he?…hmmm…

    To all that made this deal possible. Pray that the next time Mr Jaffer goes driving drunk with cocaine in his pocket and well over the posted speed limit that he doesn't kill one of your loved ones!!!
