MARK STEYN: Strange that the more Canada congratulates itself on its ‘tolerance’ the less it’s prepared to tolerate

Well, Ann Coulter is no longer in Canada, but 30 million Canadians are. So, for the sake of argument, let us take as read the frankly rather boring observation of the northern punditocracy that the whole brouhaha worked to her advantage, and consider instead whether the Canada on display during her 96-hour layover actually works to Canadians’ advantage. Which was the claim advanced by the eminent Canadian “feminist” Susan Cole appearing on U.S. TV to support the protesters’ shutdown of Miss Coulter’s Ottawa speech:

“We don’t have a First Amendment, we don’t have a religion of free speech,” she explained patiently. “Students sign off on all kinds of agreements as to how they’ll behave on campus, in order to respect diversity, equity, all of the values that Canadians really care about. Those are the things that drive our political culture. Not freedoms, not rugged individualism, not free speech. It’s different, and for us, it works.”

Does it? You rarely hear it put quite that bluntly—“Freedoms”? Ha! Who needs ’em?—but there was a lot of similarly self-regarding blather in Coulter Week euphemizing a stultifying, enforced conformism as “respect” and “diversity” and whatnot. “I therefore ask you, while you are a guest on our campus, to weigh your words with respect and civility in mind,” wrote François Houle, the provost of the University of Ottawa, addressing Miss Coulter in the smug, condescending, preening tone that comes so naturally to your taxpayer-funded, tenured mediocrity. “There is a strong tradition in Canada, including at this university, of restraint, respect and consideration in expressing even provocative and controversial opinions and urge you [sic] to respect that Canadian tradition.”

Because, after all, nothing says “restraint” and “respect” and “civility” more than a snarling mob using the threat of violence to shut down those it dislikes—and all for that beloved “Canadian tradition.” Strange that the more Canada congratulates itself on its “tolerance” the less it’s prepared to tolerate. “If any Canadian spoke like Ann Coulter,” wrote Denise Cooke-Browne, “he’d be jailed.” And she says that like it’s a good thing. And she also says it as a former investigator for the Newfoundland “Human Rights” Commission. In Denise Cooke-Browne’s Canada, there are now not unfashionable or dissenting or wrong opinions, but criminal opinions.
What are the grounds for jailing Miss Coulter? In her letter to the National Post, Ms. Cooke-Browne cited only the following:

“Remember, she has said that Canada is lucky that the United States let us exist on the same continent.”

I think this is what less enlightened societies would call a “joke.” But, of course, since becoming a beacon of “restraint” and “civility,” Canada now prosecutes jokes. The British Columbia “Human Rights” Tribunal, under the same commissar who presided over a lengthy analysis of the “tone” of my own jokes, is currently trying stand-up comedian Guy Earle for his allegedly “homophobic” put-down of a heckler. Mr. Earle isn’t a right-wing hater like me and Miss Coulter. Until he fell afoul of his Sapphic heckler, he appears to have held conventionally Trudeaupian views. Left to his own devices, he would be more likely to essay an anti-Bush gag than one of Miss Coulter’s camel jests. But he’s wound up in court anyway, having lost three years of his life and facing $20,000 in punitive damages for a remark he made in the course of a stage act for which he received a $50 bar tab. The B.C. Supreme Court advised the tribunal against proceeding with their show trial on the grounds that it was not clear they had jurisdiction. So the tribunal went ahead anyway. Susan Cole’s Canada doesn’t “work” for Guy Earle. In fact, it’s destroyed him. “You better hope and pray that you aren’t next,” he writes. “And yet no one cares.”

Very true. Canada is now a land that prosecutes comedians for their jokes. You’d think that Mr. Earle’s fellow comics might be a little disturbed about where this leads. Yet the fellows who pride themselves on their “edgy,” “transgressive” comedy are remarkably silent on what’s happening in Vancouver. So are the organizers of Juste Pour Rire, who presumably will be sending out form letters of that François Houle email, advising any visiting “edgy” “transgressive” comics from down south that here in Canada we have a strong tradition of restrained and civil comedy, and why not try something on the lines of:

“Who was that lady I saw you with last night?”

“Oh, that was my drunken lesbian heckler. Isn’t she marvellously restrained?”

Ms. Cooke-Browne makes explicit the reality—that “diversity” and “equity” and “respect” are merely the fashionable cloaks for muscle. As readers well know, I personally would rather Ann Coulter were free to tell her camel jokes than Denise Cooke-Browne were empowered to prevent her from doing so. The cure is worse than the disease. For the corrosive effects of “diversity,” look no further than three critical societal institutions: the education system, law enforcement and the media.

Isn't this what the cold war was about? Did we not oppose intolerance and suppression of freedoms such as freedom of speech?! Doesn't free speech go BOTH ways?! We have sadly become what we fought against in WW2. Our rights and freedoms have been hijacked by special interest groups, which leftist politicians willingly supported. We've become a totalitarian state…everyone keeps saying we are free, have freedom of speech..REALLY!?…that would only be if we conform to the 'correct' way of thinking…sounds like the People's Republic of China , or what the former Soviet Union was all about. Liberal leftist thinking and 'social re-engineering' has taken away the ability of people to be reasonable, yes, people have become little children with Big Brother keeping a careful watch on everyone. We are NOT a free country, especially when a political system does not represent Canadians….and Toronto does NOT represent all of Canada!

  • Frank Walus

Thanks to Mark Steyn for trying to school Canadians about freedom of speech. Too many Canadians are like elementary school tattle-tales – they boast of their love of free speech but the minute somebody says something they don't like, up goes the hand so they can tell the teacher (Big Brother, errr Big Government). Canada will be free when politicians don't have the right to police opinions. Tyrants and would-be tyrants can easily identify "hate speech" – it's whatever they virulently disagree with.

I don't remember looking at a clear Ann Coulter photograph before. That sure looks like a big adam's apple on her throat. Was that photo doctored?

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/Steve_Craig JSC

Her having an Adam's apple has been a long known thing, with many believing she has had a sex change at some point in her/his life.
I don't presume to know or care one way or the other. But for how Anti-gay the Right-wing tends to be, it sure would be hilarious if the allegations were true.

Well, you did say it would be hilarious, so I think you do care. No, I love her for her beautiful mind.

          • http://intensedebate.com/people/Steve_Craig JSC

Laughing at a joke, (Ann), is billions of miles away from "giving my life meaning".

I can understand why you "love her for her beautiful mind", cause yours is so polluted by hate. I take it your not of Christian belief. Because that Hate will get you nowhere near Heaven.

You people entirely miss the point. Levant and Coultier executed this with pin point precision to make a fool of our most politically correct universities, and our idiotic "human rights" commissions and their star chambers.
They did a great job of it, too. A fantastic job actually.

The only fools in all this was that Francois character and the leftist rent a mob that played right into their hands.

Mark my words, eventually these star chambers will pick a fight against someone that can actually fight back, (unlike their usual tactic of going after broke comedians and the like), this entire thing will end up at the steps of the Supreme Court, and it'll finally be game over for these "Human Rights" clowns.

Now, of course it should never have got that far, but we can't expect any of our politicians to actually stick their necks out and take a position on any contentious issue of the day, when they can just let the courts do it, now can we?

I am all for freedom of speech.

But for me, freedom of speech falls second to the security and well being of others. Freedom of speech is what the Nazi party so effectively brainwash a population and through the propaganda machine convince a world that Antisemitism was tolerable. Freedom of speech is what led yet another genocide in Rwanada, where words were used to turn neighbours into murders overnight.

Freedom of speech has its virtues, but it will be a dark day in hell before I stand by and watch others suffer for the sake of someones elses right to free speech.

Ann Coulter is one of the many millionaires that have no problem getting their opinion heard. I would be interested to hear the vaguely described opinion of someone who wanted to protest her speach at that University. That's an opinion that is hard to hear. No best-seller book deals, no prime-time TV spots.
Let free speech in America for a change. By that I mean take the determiner of whether opinions will be heard away from the millionaires and rupert murdochs of the world.

    • http://culturecrusader.wordpress.com/ Elbert

Well, then why not have one of those genius student protesters debate Ann? Why not? Because she'd make them into mince meat. I think by free speech you mean whomever can yell the loudest.

Free speech will soon be as dead in Canada as the right to life is for an aborted baby, because of our silence and apathy.
By our inaction, it’s obvious: Canadians care little for life or liberty. I guess, as Clint Eastwood said in a western movie, it’s because “it ain’t them doin the dyin” or being thrown in jail. Yet!
300 innocent pre-born babies died today in Canada at the hands of irresponsible parents and paid killers euphemistically called doctors. But most troubling, it was all sponsored by a corrupt government that has long ago lost its moral authority to govern. They use our tax dollars to pay and protect abortionists and pervert the law to persecute and criminalize the very people who are doing their primary God-given responsibility as civil government for them: to protect the weak and innocent (unborn). Our government has done the opposite for forty years: destroy 4 million innocents and protect and pay their murderers.

Meanwhile, a saintly grandmother, Linda Gibbons, languishes in an Ontario prison and has done so for years, all for “loving her neighbours as herself” meaning the most innocent and helpless among us: babies and their mothers. Jailed for offering a loving life-giving alternative to girls in crisis; women often being coerced by partners or parents to do what they know they will regret . Few visit or write Linda. Still fewer petition the courts and government for her release. Meanwhile the government hands the Order of Canada to our most prolific mass murderer! This is moral and legal insanity!

At the same time, the Crown in BC is seeking a 3-4 month sentence, upon my conviction for being in a bubble zone merely passing out copies of the “bubble zone” legislation while wearing a sign warning the public that they can be arrested under Bill 48 and having a piece of duct tape over my mouth. This all happened the day after the Supreme Court of Canada abrogated its responsibility to uphold my free-speech rights as “guaranteed” under the Charter, by refusing to even hear my constitutional challenge. Some guarantee… some Charter rights… some useless politically correct court!

Does anyone care? Precious few! Does the media care? Nope! They only care if it is them or their own reporters or columnists being unjustly hauled before a court or phoney human rights tribunal. The media, like most Canadians, only care about their own rights and interests, “hoping that the alligator of tyranny will eat them last,” to paraphrase Ronald Reagan. Tyrants always start with the most weak and voiceless. Have we learned nothing from history? Don’t we know by now that when we appease tyranny, it only encourages more of it, until it one day reaches unto us?

Most of all, I’m alarmed by a silent church and pro-life movement during this rapid slide down the slope into tyranny. We receive little support in our lonely peaceful and non-violent rear-guard battle to preserve the right to speak up on behalf of the oppressed, as the Bible commands us, especially at the time and place of the unborn baby’s’ demise. Most pastors and pro-lifers are content to look down their long noses from the safety of their church spectator stand and if they say anything at all, they probably criticise us for walking the talk, which embarrasses them.

As Martin Luther King Jr. said during the civil rights struggle, “It is not the opposition of our enemies that bothers me so much as the silence of my friends.” Where are the friends of Life and Liberty in Canada? It seems they are selfishly looking out for number one, while the enemies of life and liberty are sawing off the very limb they are sleeping on!

“Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom, must, like men, undergo the fatigues of supporting it.” —Thomas Paine

USA Justice William O. Douglas said, “The struggle is always between the individual and his sacred right to express himself and… the power structure that seeks conformity, suppression and obedience.”

In Canada, it’s a lonely battle for freedom for the few fighting it. If more don’t soon join in in the cause of life and liberty, we will have neither, and our chains will be of our own making!

  • Jack, Hamilton

How can we sure that all these "Human Rights" commissions aren't in fact a front for organizations like Al-Qaeda? What could be better than getting the right people in there (or bribing the right people) and helping to suppress debate about key topics of interest to Al-Qaeda, especially immigration which they need to grow stronger in this country.

  • Jack, Hamilton

Long live our free and independent Canada, free of "Human Rights" Collaborators. During and before WWll, many European countries had pro-Nazi gov'ts who stifled any criticism of the Nazi party. What's the difference between that and the modern day COLLABORATORS who shelter the Radical Islamic movement from criticism?

  • http://intensedebate.com/people/prescott prescott

The article would have been more truthful if Mr. Steyn had allowed us the knowledge that he is on the board of the group who invited Ms. Coulter into the country in the first place. At least we would understand more the slant of his diatribe.

  • guest

I cannot believe the country has become such a cesspool of stupidity. The people in Calgary should be ashamed of themselves waving placards calling Coulter a Nazi. They insult the memory of all Canadian soldiers who fought in WW2. Some people in Canada have lost all perspective. I guess they don't care about open debate and other's rights and freedoms. I am embarassed that my homeland has become such a place. These are the kind of people our forefathers supposedly fought to keep out of power. And to all Canadians, get over the diversity BS, the world is diverse. Go to Siberia or central Asia. Diversity is the most overused word in Canada.

You really want me to buy the idea that her speech was cancelled due to fear?

She comes from a country where the protesters carry guns. Somehow though, students frightened this woman and her entourage.

Did the really mean posters cause her to tremble in fear?

Editor’s Note: In this column, “True North strong not free,” (April 12, 2010), quotes were attributed to the Canadian Jewish Congress that came from The Mississauga News. The CJC had posted the quotes on their website under the heading ‘Articles of Interest.’ Subsequent commentary and satire in the column was linked to those quotes. Maclean’s regrets any confusion they might have caused by attributing certain positions directly to the CJC.

I was flabbergasted by this note from the editor!! Its amazing that Steyn would have so badly misrepresented the CJC. Frankly, such a serious error leaves the entire column in doubt. If I were Macleans I would remove it entirely.

Stop spreading misinformation. Sadly your mere unsubstantiated charge of bias does not discredit the source.

A clear pro-'family values' agenda does that.
    http://www.corporateresourcecouncil.org/white_pap…

Again, none of this is relevant. Can we, for the sake of moving the discussion forward, concede the numbers. They don't matter anyway. None of what you've said makes a difference in what kids should be taught in schools.

Lets go over a couple of simple sex-ed topics:

    1. Abstinence is the only way to avoid pregnancy and STIs (the term STI is the new way of getting it through to people that the only way to get these is from someone else).

    2. Having more sex has higher likelihood of pregnancy and STIs than having less sex.

    3. Condoms are an effective method of reducing the likelihood of pregnancy and STIs.

    4. Having anal sex increases the likelihood of acquiring an STI.

I assume that we can agree on all these points. All of these are part of sex-ed classes (unless we're talking about those ridiculous abstinence only classes mandated by the Bush administration). Can you point to any of these that is not relevant to both homosexuals and heterosexuals? I assume your answer was no.

There is nothing inherent about homosexuality that causes an increased number of sexual partners. Unless, of course, you include that they are less likely to view sex as a religious taboo. Or, that they are more likely to be depressed as a result of being ostracized, and then to use sex as an emotional crutch. Or, that, as a result of being marginalized, they form extremely tight sub-cultures that may view frequent anonymous sex as normal.

Given the above, what is the purpose of intentionally singling out any of your figures for use in the classroom? Certainly it should be distributed through the gay community. But the classroom? All your figures will do will be to further marginalize gay students. And I don't think that they need more of that.

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/Be_rad Be_rad

Well done, RG. Once buttoned, minaka cuts and runs.

Let us also contemplate possible societal pressures that may lead to so-called aberrant behaviour. Until very recently, homosexuals were universally stigmatized. Growing up knowing your birth reality and having to suppress or hide it results in screwed up self perception issues. Typical behavioural results for anyone dealing with or suppressing deep rooted personal issues are drug/alcohol abuse, hyper over achievement by sublimating through overwork/studies, eating disorders, promiscuity, etc… So further stigmatization of the sort minaka is attempting is a continuation r perpetuation of those issues.

Secondly, and more yo the original point you were trying to make, the actual "radical gay agenda" these nutbars keep bleating about boils down to little more than your basic points in this last post of yours.
