I'm surprised New Brunswick even made it on this list, what's even more surprising is that Moncton is on this, did you ever go to that place? Stupid people you say......I'm making reference here to Acadians.

I really wish people in cities that do not make lists such as this would grow up and do something about it. Hey I have an idea, let's all sit here and whine while the rest of the country gets more intelligent

Still a lot of improvements needs to be done to Québec's public school system, drop out rate are just unaceptable
The education reform that started 7 years ago to copy the scandinavian model is just a plain disaster.

Hopefully we can get rid of the liberals soon and start working to improve that.

Macleans' anti-Montreal bias has reached laughable levels.

Every poll, every article, every text, it's all Quebec-bashing.

The only "stupid" people on this thread are those who can't see past their prejudice (I'm talking to you, Quebec haters). Spend more time reading and less time picking on people you don't know, and perhaps your city will score rather well, like mine.

Merci :)

Oakville, although under separate jurisdiction then the city of Toronto, is really just a Suburb. Counting Oakville on the list would be like counting Vaughn or Brampton. These places are definitively linked to the Toronto Economy. Why do you think highway 401 or the QEW are packed at rush hour full of people heading into the City from the Suburbs. The GTA is one city. If Oakville would get it's own spot in the poll, then I want my area of the city to have one as well.

Bravo Janet. You make some astute and valid observations but I have a but. Health care. You say smart people leave QC and I think doctors, generally, are pretty smart AND well educated. Doctors get their education in Canada and leave. Not all but a lot.

I was born and raised in Saskatoon, later, lived 8 years in Montreal with children and now am in the GTA/Mississauga/Brampton area. People are smart because they are taught well. Saskatoon's school system is quite good which is demonstrated by the lack of many private schools...they are not needed.
Montreal (and most of QC) are quite behind and, as a result, have many private schools. Most kids only complete Grade 11 because that is when high school finishes in QC. The few that are going on to University must attend CEGEP for University Prep classes. QC Universities are subsidised for QC residents. Can they pay their academics as well as other Canadian Universities? I assume not, so the good profs go elsewhere. Smart people leave QC!
Now I live in the GTA and am pleased there is no more Grade 13 but this issue of having some students retake Grade 12 for a Victory Lap to gain more varied credits has got to stop. Tax money should be spend on Grades K - 12, not 12+. I am surprised to see that Oakville is not in the list. With all this in mind, that is why the West has won (this survey)!

One doesn't need to see survey results to find out that Kelowna isn't a particularly smart city. One only needs to look at who the residents elect to city council.

Let's see: 7 of the top 10 are decidedly conservative. Most of the national university cities score below 10, and Quebec rounds out the bottom six. Only question remains, how did Toronto get to #10? Anybody have an idea how to analyze these observations.

As a foreigner who's lived in Montreal for 9 years, it's no surprise to me that cities in Quebec would score badly...
Most things are a joke in Quebec.
When the (infra)structures and organizations exist, they're run so poorly that they might as well not exist.
For example, I was at Montreal's Musée des Beaux-Arts last week...
At best, it looked like a glorified European regional museum.
I really was not impressed...
And that's symptomatic of everything in Québec.

Another hint: People argue that they speak French here...
Well, then, how about they try and explain to the rest of the world, Frenchspeaking or not, why on Earth other French speakers need subtitles to understand what they say in their broadcasting (except for Radio Canada's presenters... and even then...)?
