Glen Pearson considers the last 24 hours in Toronto.

If Stephen Harper made a mistake on this, it was likely in his decision to move the summit to Toronto rather than some remote place, like a military base. In so doing, he stripped businesses of vital income for two weeks. To add to that loss must now be added the physical damage created by the Black Bloc. Those firms must be compensated for a loss they had no way to prevent.

But the Prime Minister never caused the destruction yesterday. That was left up to a kind of criminal DNA that was not only “un-Canadian,” but deeply unjust. And justice will only be served when their actions receive their due punishment. Thoreau would be sickened.

Well at least he's not blaming Harper for the damage like that disgusting Siobhan Coady, and Michelle Simpson from the other day.

I agree that the federal government should cover the repair bills for all damage, although if at all possible it would be great for the individuals who did the damage to repay it as part of their sentence in a criminal prosecution.

I disagree that this was an economic loss though. The business meetings that Toronto CEOs held with developing nations, particularly China, India, and Brazil will be very, very valuable in the future.

Isn't that what Ignatieff is always droning on about ? Networking ? China/India ?

Seems like Harper just did exactly the Liberals had been asking for.

Anyways this was a mice day for Harper.

No one objected to the G8/G20.

What they DID object to was the high cost especially on frivolus items, and holding it in Toronto.

Not much has come out of it politically or economically though.

I'd say the weekend was more of a dead duck for Harper.

Harper Hater Emily says it was a dead duck weekend for Harper.

Big surprise. The guy could cure cancer and she'd still be attacking his wife.

Let's see, he got 10 billion for maternal health that's going to save over a million children's lives.
Let's see he convinced nations to start paying down their debts in half by 2013.
Let's see he effectively killed a global bank tax AND the threat of sanctions against Canada for not going along with the tax.

The accomplishments are major, your eyes are just blinded by dog like rage.

        • Emily

Sorry, I don't hate anything but ignorance.

The media is full of stories about how this maternal health plan failed miserably, possibly because several are already in place and have been for years, nations were committed to paying down their deficits long before these meetings…the only question is timing, and there is no agreement on how. There was no global bank tax to kill, nor were there any 'sanctions' to fend off.

There was no global trade deal, no plan to change the financial infrastructure, no discussion of the sovereign debt crisis, and no awareness of where we are going.

Kindly don't project your emotions onto others.

This personal attack has been reported.

I second Mr. Pearson. T.O. was a dumb choice by the decision maker. But Harper is not responsible for the disgusting conduct by the disgusting low-life.

I third. It was bloody stupid to even think of doing this in Toronto, or any other major city. Chretien had the right idea when he had his summit in that out of the way place whose name escapes me.

Harper was not responsible for their behaviour, no, but it was easily predictable, and was an easily avoidable mistake.

  • Steve M

According to the CBC, the G20 brought in 10,000 global leaders, bureaucrats, and delegates. Exactly which of our military bases would you suggest we could have used to accomodate ALL of that PLUS the press?

    • Holly Stick

Their retinues should be limited to 10 per country. There is no excuse for this useless waste of our money.

Even a small cut in posse size would allow the event to be held at Trenton, Borden, Gagetown etc.
