This is why they hate us

The other day the Liberal leader suggested that Stephen Harper was emitting the scent of sulphur—a smell that is variously associated with rotten eggs, flatulence, natural gas or, apparently, the devil. The editors of the National Post have since published at least four pieces for the purpose of investigating the meaning of this comment—one writer suggesting it is proof the Liberal leader is an elitist snob who will never understand Canadians, one claiming this is proof he is not actually smart, one exploring biblical history, one suggesting this somehow insults the Prime Minister’s wife and wondering what would happen if Mr. Harper said something similar of his political opponents. (Note: this latter bit of outrage is most understandable if you forget any reference Mr. Harper or his backbenchers have made to an “unholy” coalition of opposition parties.) The parliamentary secretary to the Minister of National Defence has since taken to Twitter to wonder if Mr. Ignatieff even believes in the devil, while the comment was made the subject of the first question of a scrum Mr. Ignatieff was giving on Parliament Hill just now on the occasion of the launch of his summer tour.

It's a bit rich for Wherry, the snide, partisan, cheap-shot artist to be criticizing the opinion pieces of the National Post.

Even in this blog posting, his feigning of innocence of understanding what the scent of sulfur means, that is disingenuous and ridiculous for someone who claims to be intelligent.

ummm… but Harper is a sith make no mistake about it.

Hell he even walks like a upright reptilian.

Aaron we all heard what Hugo Chavez said about President Bush. He was not talking about flatulence like you flippingly suggest. He talked about the devil and how he leaves the smell of sulphur. I thought the Liberal party had a great research dept. Somehow they let the leader down on this one and Ignatieff is being called to task for it.

It is true if Harper had said the same thing about Ignatieff the media would be in full outrage, the punditocracy would be holding panel discussions and Harper would be denounced as a bully etc. etc.

    Double standard? You bet.

I don't know why you guys don't know who "us" is. I thought it was pretty clear that he's referring to the media. It makes a lot of sense if you read the post…

Once a person use those kind of adjectives to flung at his opponent, it is a sign of a vacant mind.

I agree this post speaks volumes about Wherry. Iggy makes a comment that is both boneheaded and offensive, particularly given that any political junkie or person who follows international relations is well aware of what Chavez did and said re G.W. Bush. And Wherry's rection is that he wants to talk about how ridiculous Harper's supporters are.

uhhh…I do believe he's talking about journalists, not Harper's supporters.

  • s_c_f

Both… he's talking about the National Post, the only large newspaper that has employed a substantial number of Harper supporters.
