Michael Ignatieff: At the fair

by Aaron Wherry on Sunday, August 8, 2010 3:18pm - 0 Comments

Mr. Ignatieff was greeted with a food basket, then posed with a group of small children who had apparently spontaneously arranged themselves at the entrance to the fair grounds. He was then led a short ways away to where crowds had formed seven deep on four low hills overlooking a field of well-watered mud.

With Justin Trudeau in tow, Mr. Ignatieff worked the crowd. A firefighter—firefighters standing by to assure the safety of what was about to ensue—was concerned that the Liberal leader watch where he stepped. “I’m in Ottawa, I deal with horseshit all the time,” Mr. Ignatieff assured. A woman in the back row stood and queried Mr. Trudeau to account for the GST, a nuanced discussion of provincial consumption tax policy ensued.

Mr. Ignatieff then returned to a spot overlooking the mud pit and was handed a green flag. Six windowless cars—little more than spray-painted metal frames on wheels—entered and assumed their positions. At the appointed time, Mr. Ignatieff held the flag above his head and then dropped it to the ground, officially starting Heat #3 of the Comber Agricultural Fair demolition derby.

Small chunks of mud flew in the air, a couple projectiles leaving small stains on the back of Mr. Ignatieff’s white shirt. While his wife retreated to a safe distance, he seemed reluctant to leave and stayed by the pit’s edge for the full 10 minutes required to see Heat #3 concluded with three of the six cars still more or less operational.

He was taken away to tour the midway and posed with Miss Comber Fair 2010-2011. He took in a demonstration of a biomass furnace, then bestowed a ribbon on a prize-winning heifer. Finally he was led to the community centre for some equally prize-winning pie. He would later declare the derby a bonafide “highlight” of the tour to date.

The bus is now bound for a Tim Horton’s in Windsor where apparently the right-honourable Paul Martin is in need of a ride.

    At a Timmies eh?

Obviously unconcerned about Harp's attempt to blacken Timmies name.

    • Cats

Uh huh. I'm sure the company just hates the man.

Oh wait. He lowered the corporate tax rate which allowed them to move their HQ back to Canada from Delaware.

Lowering corporate taxes was something the Liberals used to stand for until the election of Michael Ignatieff. Actually, they still supported it until just this spring. Then he morphed into Jack Layton.

      Cats away!

      • MostlyCivil

        Terrible example, actually.
Corporate HQ never physically moved. Their registered corporate paperwork did. Go look it up, and tell me all the jobs that came with that move.

Just as a Paul Martin owned Canada Steamship Lines flying a Liberian flag doesn't see the staff moving to Liberia.

I know, I'm not partisan enough to pigeonhole. I apologize for making you think.

        • MostlyCivil

Guanilon has clearly blanked out on his years of political messaging education.

Be kind, it was clearly some sort of horrible head injury.

        • tedbetts

"I apologize for making you think."

          Don't worry. You didn't.

Cats and facts have a mutual agreement of dislike.

          • Cats

            Shorter Ted Betts:

The CPC spends too much money! So lets elect the Liberals so they can spend even more!

Out catching mice ? Haven't seen you creeping around any Tory blogs lately.

  • Jenn_

Did you enjoy the Demolition Derby, Aaron? Was it all you'd hoped for and more?

  • hollinm

Are you sure there weren't throwing mud at Ignatieff?

Thank God for Aaron and his blow by blow description of Ignatieff's every move. It won't be covered by the rest of the media that's for sure.

The only horses.it that comes out of Ottawa is from his stagnated Liberal party and his lack of leadership.

    • Reader

      Better horsesh*t than bullsh*t.

      • Mike Moffatt

Not in baseball, there's a hierarchy of swearing that goes:

        chicken -> bull -> horsesh*t

    • Stewart_Smith

Actually hollinm, all of your followers are also being dragged by you into following Ignatieff's every move. Your odd infatuation with someone you feel is utterly feckless and completely incapable of threatening your magnificent leader is perhaps even a tad tetched.

      • hollinm

Stewart_Smith….actually we need to keep you guys on your toes. All that kool-aid is not good for your bodies and we Conservatives care about your well being :~).

Someone has to have a different opinion otherwise this board would go the way of the dinosaur. How many times can you say in various ways that Stephen Harper is the devil incarnate. It gets kinda boring.

        • OntarioTown

Blueberry Kool-Aid is for Conservatives – nice wine or cold beer is for Liberals.

        • tedbetts

We could all try to find out how many ways.

Unfortunately, there is only one or two commenters who feel he is the devil incarnate who might think the endeavour worthwhile.

The rest of the country just doesn't like him much or what he's doing to the country.

    • http://www.jesserosenberg.com Jesse_Rosenberg

I'm pretty sure Wherry has a blank page somewhere with a list of all the (non-planted) questions the PM has answered from both the press and the regular Canadians he pretends to fetishize, so that's totally unfair.

      • Cats

Everyone who walked up to the PM at the Calgary Stampede got to chit chat with the man for a few moments.

He was asked a wide range of questions. This standard Liberal trope that the PM doesn't take questions from Canadians is beyond silly.

        Mice day.

        • Jenn_

Strange how the only place in Canada he would do that is Alberta.

          • Cats

There are towns and cities across Canada with a similar ideological profile as Calgary.

Yeah, yeah. We get the suggestion. The cheap shot is obvious. You're basically saying he only takes questions from a friendly audience.

Newsflash – the only people coming to Ignatieff's rallies are Liberal partisans.

The rest of the country don't like the man. His approval ratings are in the toilet. So they don't care or waste their time seeing him.

So all these audience questions Ignatieff is taking are from friendly Liberal partisans. One giant, empty echo chamber with the fan club.

            Cats away!

          • Reverend Blair

Funny, I've never voted Liberal in my life and won't be anytime soon. I'd welcome the opportunity to go see Ignatieff and listen to what he has to say though, just as I'd welcome the opportunity to see any other political leader in an open forum without planted questions and canned answers.

          • MostlyCivil

"Newsflash – the only people coming to Ignatieff's rallies are Liberal partisans."
"The rest of the country don't like the man."

It must be a real hassle being omniscient.

          • Cats

            Its called public polling.

Ignatieff has worse numbers than Dion. Just outright pathetic numbers.

            Best fishes.

        • lenny

Exactly. Why would he waste time taking questions from the media, when he's busy answering the questions of 30 million Canadians one-on-one?
Anytime I have a question, I just hop on a plane for my chat -chat with Steve.
BTW, any idea where I could find his upcoming schedule?

          • Cats

He's doing a tour at the end of August.

            Best fishes.

          • OntarioTown

Dead fish in the heat really smells bad

    • Patchouli

Actually his tour seems to be getting quite a lot of coverage, both nationally and locally.

But harper is at the aquarium in BC today, so he's hitting the road too. Jumping the shark, apparently.

    • John W.

Quite a stretch to complain about Aaron's coverage of Iggy when we have to endure the reverential, yes sir no sir, kiss his boots Craig, coverage we get on Harper from the press gallery.
"Thanks for giving us this one little pre cleared question sir."
And, "thanks for sending me those talking points again today sir. We'll use them for sure. Makes the job so much easier when we can understand the issues properly."

    • OntarioTown

Mr. Double-double – hates it when people of other political persuasions attack Harper, but again, the childish double-standard.

Just look at what Mr. Double-double said here folks – the statement of an adult?

  • Wascally Wabbit

@hollinm – why what an original thought!
Did you thunk that up yourself – because I checked Dimitri's suggestions for the day – and I confess – I think you are winging it.
Very brave of you hollinm – because the last one to try that – Slogan Boy Patrick Brown himself – is now talking in a high squeaky voice!

    • hollinm

Wascally Wabbit…….I don't know what you are talking about. I am a private citizen who calls it as he sees it. Unfortunately it does not conform to the thinking of most commentators on this board but that doesn't bother me in the least.

Think about it. If myself and other Conservatives did not comment you people would be just talking to yourselves. How much fun is that eh?

  • TwoYen

Yeah, sure…small children spontaneously line up to see the "Great Leader" all the time. Perhaps in North Korea…but I've never seen it in Canada. It would be more credible if we just admit that political organizers have a legitimate role in events like this. Good political organizers never let anything be spontaneous.

    • http://dredtory.blogspot.com/ Sir_Francis

Yeah, sure…small children spontaneously line up to see the "Great Leader" all the time.

So, where does your humour-proofing come from, TwoYen? Is it congenital, or was it initiated through hypnosis?

      • TwoYen

Wherry should leave the humour to Feschuck, who does it better.

        • harrylimelives

Unreported humour remains the intellectual property of Dino Delmaestro. Now there's a double-double…

  • DianeG

The newly expanded Beureau of Unreported Crimes provides humour-proof jackets in all sizes.

  • http://dredtory.blogspot.com/ Sir_Francis

“I’m in Ottawa, I deal with horse—t all the time”…

And, with those crude words, Ignatieff raises the faux-populist stakes geometrically. It'll be hard for Harper to catch up. He can start by actually uttering a sentence that doesn't sound like it's coming from a senior partner of North America's least dynamic actuarial firm. Perhaps Laureen can write him up a script that features a vulgar (or at least interesting) word or two.

    • Jan

'Horse sh*t, demolition derby in a cowpatch and then off to a Timmie's? They really have gotten into the game. Harper's going to have to step it up.

      • http://dredtory.blogspot.com/ Sir_Francis

Yep. The Harp's in serious danger of being out-rednecked. Dimitri better get his boss out to NASCAR, or arrange to have him photographed at a cock fight or a women's mud-wrestling tourney in the basement of a Camrose Hooters.

        • lgarvin

I understand Steve is having a beer fridge installed on the porch at 24 Sussex. Not to be outdone, Iggy will be putting a car up on cinder blocks in the driveway at Stornoway.

          • Jan

            And there goes the neighbourhood.

          • Holly Stick

            Cue Freddy Eaglesmith:

When on earth did we become white trash?
How come we got seven dogs living in the garage?
How come our only eight-track is a tape of Johnny Cash?
When on earth did we become white trash?

          • Emily

            When Harp was elected, unfortunately

          • Orson Bean

There you have it folks, the latest reason why Harper is evil and dangerous: if he doesn't get turfed out of office soon, we'll all turn into white trash.

          • David_M.

And we'll be lovin' it because the new household survey tells us so.

          • Emily

Harper started a 'culture war'….he just chose the wrong side.

          • Patchouli

HIlarious….so Dryden and Trudeau coming over to Stornoway to pose as grease monkeys? Just a few good old boys working on the Barracuda?

          • MostlyCivil

My dad had a 69 Barracuda. He was a time management expert with an honours business degree He was also a mechanic, earlier in his career.

I know you're working on humour here, but you're furthering the use of inaccurate stereotypes.

            That's just lazy thinking.

          basement of a Camrose Hooters.

There's more than one Hooters in Camrose? Who knew!

          • Crit_Reasoning

C'mon, Phil. As an Albertan, you know darn well there's no way a small town like Camrose could sustain even a single Hooters. If you want to see hooters in Camrose, you need to go to the Big Valley Jamboree.

          • Phil

Hey CR, it is a fact that I was caught off-guard by Sir_F. I have been to Camrose on several occasions and no Hooters to be seen, not that I would be searching….the concept of that restaurant chain makes me uncomfortable.

And any of the good old boys from Camrose who are so inclined can easily be at the Hooters in WEM in about an hour if the need arises.

Btw, did you know that the wonderful town of Boyle has a Hooters restaurant, although it isn't the real thing…..whenever I drive through Boyle I'm always surprised to see that the lawyers from the real thing haven't caught up with that business.

          • tedbetts

I may be missing something, but what makes you uncomfortable about owls?

          • Phil

Heh. You, owls, missing something……I find that highly unlikely. ;-)

And I only know you by your posts here at macleans.ca, but I would be surprised to find out that you regularly take the missus and your adolescent children out to Hooters. Regularly, he!!, I'd be surprised if you even did that once!

          • Phil

Have you ever made it out to the BVJ? I haven't…isn't that the festival that often turns into a bit of a mudbowl?

          • Crit_Reasoning

I have, years ago, and it was lots of fun. I lucked out–when I went, the weather was hot and sunny. In recent years, there have been weather-related mishaps. Last year, tragedy struck when a wind storm collapsed the main stage just before Kevin Costner's set, and a woman was killed.

          • Phil

Right, I was actually thinking about that death from last year, but for some reason I had it in my mind that that was some other festival.

As it turns out we were actually returning from Kananaskis that day; we witnessed that storm while we were getting a Timmie's in Red Deer (the skies had that awful pukey green tinge to them). We had to delay our return to the QE2 until the deluge had mostly blown over.

          • http://dredtory.blogspot.com/ Sir_Francis

Well, there's a Hooters for the hoi polloi and another that uses bilingual menus—for the town’s elitist folks.

          • Phil

I wonder which one Kevin Sorenson frequents….

    • John W.

And Iggy still gets the census, prison farm, and gun control loving crowd too.

Kool-aid. Bath water. I'll have a Honey Brown, please.

  • http://dredtory.blogspot.com/ Sir_Francis

She's probably prime Conservative MP material.

Now, should Ignatieff throw her under his bus, or should he wait for Harper to throw her under his?

  • TedTylerEzro

I'm glad that Ignatieff is taking in the fair and broadening his horizons. I know the bus tour is a bit hokey, but I appreciate it when politicians participate in public life outside of political events. If nothing else, it gets people meeting each other, which convinces all involved that our fellow citizens aren't so bad after all.

The embrace of Timmies as a staple of Canadian identity though has to stop. It's just a coffee shop, and what's more it isn't even a very good coffee shop. Their doughnuts are just tasteless wonderbread covered in sugar, and their coffee is merely… ordinary.

    • http://dredtory.blogspot.com/ Sir_Francis

It's just a coffee shop, and what's more it isn't even a very good coffee shop.

You don't understand. Timmies' badness is precisely why the cynics in the CPC tend to elevate it to iconic stratus. To them, Tim Hortons embodies the mediocrity they attribute to Canada as a whole. The "patriotism" behind the identification is really just an ironic bit of anti-Canadianism from the folks who see Canada as a second-rate socialist backwater. It stands to reason that they would consider the spirit of Canada to be embodied by an institution like a cheap coffee shop rather than by, say, Parliament.

      • OntarioTown

Yup, cheap coffee, artificial artery clogging crap

      • Orson Bean

"The "patriotism" behind the identification is really just an ironic bit of anti-Canadianism from the folks who see Canada as a second-rate socialist backwater."

So if you like Tim Horton's you actually hate Canada?

        • http://dredtory.blogspot.com/ Sir_Francis

So if you like Tim Horton's[sic] you actually hate Canada?

No. If you think Tim Hortons is the institutional vehicle of Canada's heart and soul, you are an idiot who thinks Canada is trivial.

Care to quibble on that point? On the basis of its élitism, perhaps?

          • Orson Bean

"If you think Tim Hortons is the institutional vehicle of Canada's heart and soul, you are an idiot who thinks Canada is trivial. "

Personally, I think you're taking the tongue-in-cheek elevation & reverence of certain Hoser Institutions — e.g., Timmy's, Stompin' Tom, Bob & Doug Mackenzie, Johnny Canuck, Don Cherry — way too seriously.

The small child of one of my friends was sporting a Bob & Doug t-shirt the other day. I didn't chew out the child or his parents for trivializing Canada. Lighten up.

  • JamesHalifax

As suspected…..Aaron is spending his "vacation" time with the Iggy Express.

    Gone fishin eh?

    Hmm..

  • Gaunilon

What is with Justin Trudeau being "in tow"? I've noticed this before the tour as well – Trudeau seems to be grouped with Ignatieff for photos as often as possible. Why is that?

    • Jan

How many days has Trudeau been on the bus? I assume the Cons are keeping track of this sort of thing.

    • Oliver

A lot of people liked P.E. Trudeau (and a lot hated him). Just a way to connect with those voters I guess.

    • Jenn_

Most if not all Liberal MPs are jumping on the bus for a couple of days at some point or another. I imagine this was just Justin Trudeau's stint.

  • tedbetts

I heard an interesting survey report a couple of months ago on the radio about Americans and their interests in sports and their political affiliations. Some of it was expected but some was really quite surprising.

Republican voters are most likely to watch the college football and NASCAR and pro bull riding, which is perhaps not surprising, but also PGA, women's PGA, NHL and tennis.

Democrats are most likely to watch NBA and WNBA and soccer, which is not that surprising, but also are most likely to watch wrestling, monster truck rallies.

According to the poll, though, the type of people who like the sports that Democrats like are less likely to vote than the type of people who like the sports that Republicans like.
