Hey look: Story of the century

From the print edition, my column considers the historian Tony Judt, much noted for his brave stoicism in facing the disease that killed him. I read his big book a few years ago and simply wanted to share two of the stories from it that stuck with me.

"Ill Fares The Land" went on my reading list immediately.

I finished reading it the day before he died. It's a must read. I've been contemplating a post on it but there's a lot to think about, so more reflection is most definitely needed. I hope you enjoy it too. And thanks for the piece Paul.

I was intrigued by the premise — a letter to the younger generation defending social democracy.

As a one-time (but no longer!) leftist, I had to read it.

The most frustrating thing about "Postwar" is that it was completed in 2005/06, a very indeterminate point in the history of the European project. Judt acknowledges as much in his conclusion, which leaves more questions than answers about the future of Europe.
I'd hoped that he'd come back to it at some point, maybe a 10th anniversary edition in 2016. Sadly, that won't happen, but I am grateful for the books and ideas he left us.
