‘If we can find a way to move forward’

by Aaron Wherry on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 1:33pm - 0 Comments

In the wake of Jack Layton’s announcement yesterday, Charlie Angus, one of the dozen NDP MPs whose votes will decide the fate of the gun registry, doesn’t seem entirely committed to voting for C-391 on third reading. But Jim Maloway, who has repeated his intention to vote for C-391, is unmoved.

Regardless, said Maloway, he still plans to vote with Hoeppner. ”Nothing there changes my view on the long-gun registry,” said Maloway.

He also said Layton’s proposal is too little too late. ”This bill just went through committee last spring,” said Maloway. “Where were all these amendments at the committee?”

I avowed long ago to do what ever I could to help unseat Shelly Glover in the next federal election, but if the NDP can't get there act together and understand the importance of the LGR than I might focus my efforts else where….

    • http://stumblingabordeaux.blogspot.com Pato31

The unfortunate thing about unseating Shelly Glover is that Raymond Simard is the alternative. Then again, at this point, anything is better than Glover.

      • ChrisWPG

Ya, that pretty much describes my feelings.

        • Mark R

I would love to ahve Shelly Glover as my MP. Her and Candice Hoeppner are on their way to Saint hood.

        • Patchouli

Run against her! Be the alternative you seek.

          • http://stumblingabordeaux.blogspot.com Pato31

I would if I wasn't living in Bordeaux for the next two years… sigh. Oh Winnipeg, how I'll miss you!

          • Patchouli

Well THAT sounds tough — what an amazing adventure to live in Bordeaux for two years. Pea green with envy!

          • BCer in Mtl

Just visiting are you? Or will you just be visiting when you go back to the Peg?

          • http://stumblingabordeaux.blogspot.com Pato31

Tough to say. I never thought of how detrimental this could be if I ever decide to become leader of the official opposition!

          • ChrisWPG

Lets see, run against the incumbent and the parachuted in candidate for the libs, for the third place NDP?

    • Guy

According to her campaign material and several events reported in the media, her main reason for running was the fact that most cops on the street OPPOSED the LGR. They felt it was a waste of time and money and in no way made the streets safer for them. I'll take the word of a 20+ year experienced police officer over a pencil pushing bureaucrat any day.

      • BGLong

Considering that her years of experience were mostly in the PR department …. perhaps more
dangerous than it might seem … her expertise is scarcely solid.
But if anecdotal expertise matters, my nephew (RCMP) just finished a six year tour in Nunavut
and his chief complaint about the registry is that it isn't nearly strong enough. Though he does
agree with me that cost-recovery should not be part of it.

        • criselis

Would it be fair to descried someone in the PR department a "pencil pushing bureaucrat"?

  • Amateur Hour

”Nothing there changes my view on the long-gun registry,” said Maloway.

Wow. Intellectually challenged is putting it mildly.

  • wascally wabbit

Charlie Angus has established a well deserved reputation with the rural voters in his constituency – especially the First Nations folks up there. He knows his rep. will not be heavily damaged if he switches for the right reasons.
Others (like for example Carol Hughes in this riding) are too new and frankly have not done enough to be able resist the second onsluaght of the ten percenters etc. which Hoeppner's supporters will be sending out.
She's leaning towards doing what's right – but knows the gun lobby will make her pay!

  • Mark R

Nope… get rid of the Gun registry means automatic Saint.

  • ChrisInKW

Hopefully the way forward means first defeating Bill C-391. Rather difficult to fix something that's already dead. There's nothing partisan about pointing out this fact.

  • Mark R

If I was writing this blog it go like this first quote today from Ignatieff.
“So the issue, and I’ll be frank with you, that wasn’t at the front of my mind at the beginning of this summer, surely was at that front of the minds of Canadians as we went coast to coast,” said Mr. Ignatieff. “And do you know what that issue is? It’s democracy. Democracy.”
    Highlight democracy.
From Jane Taber in April 19th
Michael Ignatieff plans to whip his caucus to vote against a controversial Conservative bill to abolish the long-gun registry. MPs who do not vote with him will be punished.
    Highlight whipped and punished.
    Yup Democracy Iggy style.

    • ChrisWPG

The whole whipped vote argument holds no water when you consider the Cons have whipped almost every single vote since taking office.

      • Mark R

        Liar

        • ChrisWPG

Aww Mark, sometimes I think your a liberal in fox clothing just making sure we can point out the idiocy of the Cons arguments.

          • Mark R

Besides why are you bringing up the CPC? Cannot defend Iggy being a hypocrite obviously. Better to deflect.
Iggy talks of democracy and whips a private members bill, and you are ok with that?

          • Patchouli

Look, anyone who believes that strongly has the option to vote the way they believe, and take the punishment. If you belong to a party, you got to toe the party line.

But if they really believed, they would take the discipline. Right?

          • ChrisWPG

Um, I'm not a fan of Iggy. I rarely vote liberal. He can be a hypocrite all he wants. And really, we're still calling it a private members bill? This is the CPC's crowning glory and money maker for years!

That said, whipping a vote in the commons is as common as bed bugs in toronto. It's hardly worth getting upset about. I would be in favor of the NDP whipping the vote. There hasn't been a political party in western democracy that hasn't whipped a few votes. Sometimes the greater good out ways the short sightedness of a few MP's…..

          • Mark R

Iggy is the only leader to go around saying the number one issue for Canadians coast to coast is democracy? And then after his tour goes back to parliament and whips his vote to toe the Liberal line. The NDP is right on this one. Liberals out of touch.

          • JamesHalifax

            Sorry, Chris….but whipping a Private Member's bill is new….

Iggy's setting a precedent, while Jack Layton is showing respect for his caucus.

  • Greg

Shorter James Halifax: I am an old white guy. That makes me an expert on Toronto. I know dark skinned people are out to get me and now the cops are out to get me too.

    • JamesHalifax

Actually, Greg….gang-bangars come in all shapes and sizes. Toronto's are mainly black (Jamaican), the West coast has a lot of Asians, and in the Southern USA they consist mainly of Hispanics and blacks.

The wannabe gang-bangars tend to be white yuppies…….but they're not as trigger-happy.

And guess what…..no registry in the world will stop any of them from getting guns.

As for anyone "out to get you"….sorry, Greg. They're not after you….they mainly shoot each other.

And for the record…the cops don't do a very good job of stopping them from doing exactly that. And the registry won't help them one iota.

  • ChrisWPG

Question for procedural geeks, can Harper make a private members bill a confidence vote?

    • Mark R

Why would he? If the registry gets killed. He'll campaign on the registry being brought back by Liberals. If he loses, he campaigns again to kill it.
