148 to 149

by Aaron Wherry on Tuesday, September 7, 2010 2:23pm - 0 Comments

The resignation of Maurizio Bevilacqua became official last week. Postmedia reports Inky Mark’s departure will follow this week. That subtracts a single vote from each side of the C-391 debate. The declarations of Charlie Angus and Glenn Thibeault though add two votes to the no side.

From our last update then, the count has flipped: 149 votes against C-391, 148 votes in favour.

Seven NDP votes (Malcolm Allen, Niki Ashton, Nathan Cullen, Claude Gravelle, Carol Hughes, Bruce Hyer and John Rafferty) remain undeclared. And one no vote (Jean-Yves Roy) might soon be vacated.

Let's not pop the corks yet, as they say the only poll that counts is the one one on vote day, that said I feel a little bit better about the world today.

We can open a can of beer though, can't we?

      • ChrisWPG

        We needed an excuse?

  • Cats

Why can't Inky Mark delay his retirement by another week ??

    DUH!

    • ChrisWPG

He has a deadline to meet for his mayoral bid and no doubt doesn't want it to be an election issue…..

      DUH!

perhaps Harper is afraid he'll speak on behalf of his constituents on the CWB issue.

  • PolJunkie

That's still too close. We need more NDP defections.

    • tobyornotoby

Defections? You see every issue as a war, I guess.

What`s new over at LPC headquarters today ?

      • Patchouli

You mean the LPC forced this guy to act like a douche on a horse? That's despicable.

        • sea_n_mountains

ha! i wonder how they did it?

  • MarionKl

So I guess this will now become about Liberal absenteeism during the vote.

    • Style

People should start sending the anti-registry Liberals echinacea and vitamin C to keep them healthy enough to vote. Scott Andrews, Larry Bagnell, Jean-Claude D'Amours, Wayne Easter, Keith Martin, Anthony Rota, Todd Russell and Scott Simms. Is this why Wayne Easter has supended his prop comedy routine recently?

      • Crit_Reasoning

Is this why Wayne Easter has supended his prop comedy routine recently?

Easter's newest prop is a waffle. He'll use it to explain to his farming constituents why he broke his promise to stand against the long gun registry.

  • tedbetts

It's going to be close unless more NDP supporters of this bill pull a Harper on the bill.

  • SunshineCoaster

Before he was against the long-gun registry, Stephen Harper was for it.

He was for it when he thought it was good policy, claiming it could be "helpful" and voted for its creation twice; but when his principles conflicted with getting elected, Stephen Harper was quick to unload them.

So when do the MPs from the opposition start targeting the urban CON mps with mailouts and radio ads? While lack of $ may count for part of it, likely some reasonable interest in not wasting money is another. I'd recommend that they start sending letters to the editor to remind the electorate in Saanich, Coquitlam, Edmonton, Calgary, and virtually all of the con ridings in Quebec…

    • Reverend_Blair

I've been wondering about that too. Guns aren't too popular in Charleswood or Tuxedo here in Winnipeg, and are pretty divisive in St. Boniface and Fort Richmond too. The Liberals should be heavily targeting those areas.

  • SooperNoob

I think that is the point. It is a divisive issue, and it is one that the conservatives probably have more to gain from than the opposition. People who are against the registry are *REALLY* against the registry. Those in favor are kind of in favor of it so long as it isn't measured against other initiatives, like anti-gang legislation.

  • hosertohoosier

Prediction: the NDP will whip just enough votes to defeat the bill by one vote.
