Tom Clark and CTV to Part Ways

Toronto, ON (September 7, 2010) –
Tom Clark, host of CTV News Channel’s POWER PLAY WITH TOM CLARK and former CTV News Washington Bureau Chief, has moved on to pursue other opportunities, it was announced today.

In his almost four decade long association with CTV, Tom Clark has become one of Canada’s most respected journalists. In that time, he served as CTV’s China Bureau Chief, CTV Washington Bureau Chief, host and senior correspondent of CTV’s W5, as well as reporting from seven war zones, natural disasters and political upheavals. Clark witnessed the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the student uprising in Tien An Men Square. He covered almost every federal election in Canada since 1974.

“CTV is extremely proud of its long association with Tom Clark, and wishes him well in his future endeavours,” said Robert Hurst, President CTV News.

Wells here again. I have no inside information about what happened here, although Tom seemed to have the wind knocked out of him after Lisa Laflamme was named as Lloyd Robertson’s replacement. Two of his producers left their jobs over the summer, so I suspect this was coming for a while.

I was an occasional guest on both the CBC and CTV dinner-hour broadcasts and generally preferred to be on Clark’s set. He has central-casting TV anchor looks, so his competence and genuine interest in the subjects he’s covering have been too often underestimated.

What’s striking about the news release is that it doesn’t say a word about who might replace Tom Clark at Power Play With Tom Clark. Probably they’d have to change the title. I wonder whether CTV will even look for a replacement. The 15-minute headline wheel must be a tempting alternative. That would be too bad.

We will miss Tom Clark very much, he was super at his job, hansome, a good personality and had a great show, I am sick of females on TV they are hard to understand, and give me break if Jane Taber takes the show it will self destruct.

I suspected something was up, when I hadn't seen Tom Clark on CTV for a while.
Even before I read the article on his leaving, I had an idea he was disappointed in
not replacing LLoyd Robertson at the anchor desk.
Also disappointed was Keith Morrison who left CTV for the U.S. market.
It appears that ability and talent is not enough to advance a broadcast career.
It appears to be more based on luck.
I have also heard it said that the gender bender has hindered talented male
broadcasters from getting ahead and even a media job for that matter.
Tom may not land a national anchor job, but I am sure he'll make out ok.
Probably a lot better than many others, struggling to find a media job.

I miss Tom Clark on Power Play, don't enjoy the show anymore with Jane. I'm very disappointed in the networks hiring mostly women news announcers, seems like that's all there is. It's getting so that I don't want to watch those newscasts anymore.
Give me men doing the news anyday !

You've hit the nail on the head. Lloyd Robertson was (is) getting very annoying. My wife and I can't stand watching him anymore. Same goes for Sandi Rinaldo. She sounds like she is talking to children all the time. At least for the time being, Lisa LaFlamme is a breath of fresh air, but we'd have preferred Tom Clark to replace Lloyd. Tom Clark and John Tory both remind us of our favourite public school teacher back in the 50's. pdm

Yes, Lisa LaFlamme is excellent as a reporter, but I really miss Tom Clark's quiet reasoned presentation. I hope he doesn't vanish completely from the Canadian TV screen. I'm not a fan of Evan Soloman. But then, I'm not much of a fan of any news coverage these days. It's all very depressing, watching Canada slide farther and farther down the 'slipp'ry slide".
Bring on the election. Get in gear, Iggy!!

I always thought Tom Clark was perfect to replace Lloyd Robertson and was stunned when they announced Lisa LaFlamme would be the new anchor person.Tom was a natural for the job.Well spoken.clear voice, came off looking like an anchor should. There is no doubt in my mind that in a short time he would have outshone the other anchors out there.Lisa is alright but not to be the one replacing Lloyd.I am truly sorry to see Tom Clark go and will always wonder if he left on his own.I enjoyed the news when ever he delivered it.I have been a listener of CFTO-CTV since it started but would leave if Tom Clark gets a job with another station.
