Meanwhile, the Conservative MP for Edmonton-St. Albert tweets that he is “opposed to using taxpayer’s dollars to build NHL arenas or subsidize teams.”

If Harper agrees to pitch in on this arena, he's the one that will be the maverick.

  • Emily

Do I see a snowball starting to roll downhill?

    • Cats

You are aware that the entire Liberal + NDP + BQ caucus supports the arena right ???

      CATS!

      • Matlock

So we should all shrug our shoulders, lie back, and let the feds blow upwards of $1 billion on arenas/stadiums for Quebec, Edmonton, Calgary, Regina, Hamilton, and possibly others?

Just because the opposition parties don't disagree with the government doesn't make the government right.

        • Emily

          Yup, agreed.

          Stupid ideas are stupid ideas.

        • Cats

          Nope.

Solution: Don't vote Liberal, NDP, or BQ.

Support local candidates in nomination meetings who are true blue Tories and not the old PC, squishy, Quebec style, red Tory types.

          Cats!

          • Emily

Cats….you've been sniffing too much of your own litterbox.

          • Matlock

So, what should the voters of… hmm, say Calgary Southwest do? Sit at home on their hands, as there is no true blue candidate?

          • Cats

Considering Harper hasn't announced his decision yet this sort of speculation seems pointless, eh ?

We know the BQ/NDP/Liberals will always do the wrong thing fiscally.

Its a toss up for the Tories. But this is Canada. That's how things are done.

Sorry mice, lost fishes, birds falling, accounts empty, all tapped out.

          • Matlock

"Considering Harper hasn't announced his decision yet this sort of speculation seems pointless, eh ?"

You think Mr. Harper would allow the photo op of the Quebec MP's in Nordiques jerseys if this wasn't basically a done deal?

It's hard to disagree with the political pundits here that Harper's damned either way, especially given the popularity of Regis Labeaume… either he goes through with the funding and ticks off conservative voters in the rest of the country (… I'm sure Conservative voters have no problem with Harper's decision either way), or he does not go through with the funding and can kiss his seats in the 418 good bye in the next election, which would most likely revert to the BQ.

          • Cats

Wearing a jersey isn't the same as making a funding announcement.

Harper himself said he wants the Nordiques back. So does everyone. Its possible to deny funding and still want the Nordiques back.

            Cats!

Who had a surplus after they left government? Hint: It wasn't the Conservatives. And who has blown it? (And who blew it before the stimulus was even announced). Hint: It wasn't the Liberals.

The claim that Conservatives are responsible fiscal managers is a myth and one that should be attacked easily next election campaign.

          • Cats

Scott Tribe trots out the OLD LIE.

Governments don't create surpluses and deficits, economic conditions do.

So the Liberals had a nice tech boom and then a commodity boom ? And Harper just had a nice once in a lifetime world wide economic crash ?

            Yup. Ok. Just checking.

Hah! Scott Tribe has jumped the shark this time.

            Cats!

          • Anon Liberal

Is there any way we could drop a nuclear bomb on "Cats"? God his shtick is tiresome.

    • AJR79

I think what you see is a foolish trial balloon, having the air knocked out of it, and falling back to earth with a thud.

      • burlivespipe

like changing the words to the national anthem?

  • madeyoulook

TWO! Two real conservative Conservatives! Ah-ah-ah…

    • Dave

If you can count to two, that more than qualifies you to replace Flaherty.

  • MaggiesFarmboy

Like Bernier, Rathgeber starts positioning for a leadership run early. <cough>

  • Jan

James Rajotte is also advising fiscal prudence i.e. sensing which way the wind may be blowing.
