Undash those dreams

Natural Resources Minister Christian Paradis says the federal government might still fund an arena in Quebec City.

“We’ve always left the door open, saying that we would evaluate any project that would be submitted,” Paradis told reporters at a global energy conference. ”But one thing is clear: if the project is only about a hockey team or a professional sports team, this is a private matter. It would have to generate tangible benefits for broader things than having only professional sports.”

The honourable member for Mégantic—L'Érable doesn't want to let Harper off the hook eh?

$175-million to help keep him in the House sounds like a bargain to me.

When Paradis says 'we' I wonder who is he referring to? Is it me and my good buddy Steve? Me and the other schmucks who were told to wear the hockey shirts and now are being cut loose for doing it, and who are now at risk of losing our seats? Or is me and the rest of the caucus – who aren't happy about this idea?

I wonder how much money the annual Pee Wee tournament brings into the city? I'd imagine that might be a point the pro arena people will make.

(not that a new arena would drastically alter that figure, but it's at least an argument :)

I'm still mystified that a private investor can't be found. Are the economics of building a new arena really so unappealing, even with 60% funding from the city and the province?

Paladeau is a little strapped at the moment with the amount he is pouring into QMI / Sun Media.

Kory and Ezra do not come cheap ya know.

Oh, sick. Wonder if the Western Cons are starting to get upset with all this?

Well I know a few — I'd ask them, but they get all weird and turn red, cross their arms and yell about Liberals. Not conducive to much, but I do get what they mean.

      • Blue

How do Western Libs feel about all this ?

There aren't enough of us to get a proper sample.

No, Aaron, this is the MP closing the door even more firmly than Harper, pouring salt into Quebec's still fresh wounds. Beat the rush and publish the contradictory interpretation of this quote now, before some other outlet beats you to it. You can make a fresh blog post wiht the same quote and the new meaning so it can even help you meet today's quota.

There's a new Mr. Dithers in town and he has 6 heads, 12 voices and 1 very sore neck.

All this serial musing by members of cabinet must be like death by a thousand cuts for the Tories' support elsewhere in the country. It makes sense that, every time a Tory MP equivocates in public on the subject, another voter (or two or dozen or…) is hearing about the issue for the first time and re-examining his/her preferences. They'd be wise to kill all the rumination and speculation and do damage control within the environs of Quebec City.
