Sidney Crosby vs. Aung San Suu Kyi

Who captured your imagination in 2010?

Sidney Crosby

He’s the man behind the brilliant, blindingly quick goal that sent this country into a paroxysm of joy at the 2010 Olympic Games. It was, without overstating, the goal that defined the Games themselves, so vivid is its memory, and so deep its impression on the national psyche. As challenging as 2010 has been—with its wars, natural disasters and political upheavals—“the Goal” resides on a higher plane, dwarfing among other things Sidney Crosby’s other achievements, which include a Stanley Cup and a host of personal awards.

Aung San Suu Kyi

When, on the evening of Nov. 13, Aung San Suu Kyi suddenly appeared from behind the red iron bars surrounding her house, her lonely prison for most of the past two decades, her ecstatic supporters erupted into cheers; many were reduced to tears. Thousands had rushed to Suu Kyi’s crumbling white villa on Rangoon’s Inya Lake after security forces began taking apart the compound’s barbed-wire barricades: a clear signal the world’s most famous political prisoner would finally be freed from house arrest.

Yes, Sidney Crosby may well have reached great heights at a young age of 23, to such extent that his success does feel surreal from third person's point of view.

Comparing Crosby with Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi is sheer insult to theadversities faced by this woman for almost her entire life. This is ridiculous. Crosby and Aung San Suu Kyi cannot be compared given the weight of the situation of Aung San Suu Kyi.

      Thank you.

I agree. While Crosby's success may have an impact on the moral and identity of Canadians, the work of Aung San Suu Kyi presents a ray of hope to many who follow non-violent methods of protest for democracy. Joining her recently, both as a Nobel Peace Prize winner and fellow supporter of democracy is Liu Xiaobo from China.

Aung San Suu Kyi may not win this award, but she will continue to inspire generations for change and belongs to those ranks of people who give great hope. She hold a place in my heart beside Mandela and now Liu.

This isn't a contest for Person of the year. It's for Newsmaker of the year. Who did you read more about in 2010?

Then why is it open to voting? Macleans could surely just tally mentions in the press and leave it at that.

No I understand absolutely. But i convincingly believe that Sidney Crosby has had an impact on Canada through his golden goal. Many people outside of North America may not even know him as well North Americans.

But Aung San Suu Kyi has captured headlines from behind closed doors. Completely two different situations. Her release has resonated with much anticipation and hope globally.

  • Idunnobout that

Aung San Suu Kyi sacrifices her life (that's what it is when you are imprisoned in your home because of your beliefs) for the welfare of her country and is a hero of democracy.

Sidney Crosby hits a rubber disk with a stick while skating for the welfare of Sidney Crosby.

I like hockey, but this comparison is ludicrous.
