"This was a bit of a token of saying, 'Thank you.'"

The Globe surveys the G8′s “legacy” in Muskoka.

The University of Waterloo’s environmental research centre, completed 11 months ago, remains deserted and without signage. The echoing hallways of a summit centre are largely bare save for pieces of community art, while a brand-new seniors centre, banquet hall and drop-in daycare were empty on Monday afternoon.

When I wrote to my Conservativve MP complaining about the amount of money spent on the G8/G20, he replied they didn't want to spend it, but had to. Yeah right!

Had to? Why? So that s/he could be re-elected?

(Bonus points if it's Tony Clement.)

  • craigola

It's like you've never been a guest before. Of course they had to spend it, "as a bit of a token of saying, 'Thank you.'"

They could have just brought a nice bottle of wine….

And they said thank you to Toronto by arresting more citizens than ever before in Canada's history for exercising the right to be in public streets.

Gazebo / arrest – Conservative riding / not conservative riding.

Toronto to Stephen Harper: We just want you to acknowledge the human rights abuses perpetrated in Canada's largest mass arrest and to reimburse our small businesses like you said you would. But we wouldn't say no to a small "thank you" either. Heck, even half of the Clement slush fund and you'd have us happy.

A $50M "Thank You" to Muskoka stands in sharp contrast to the "F*ck You" delivered to Toronto.

A Toronto City Councillor on CBC Radio this morning said that most of his small business constituents received only a fraction of their damage claims from a federal fund following the G20 debacle. One business claimed $300,000 in damages; he received a check for $6000 along with a letter telling him that the payment would be cancelled if he made the details public.

    Unbelievable.

Funny how fast tthe Cons have turned into Libranos.

Maybe they always were exactly like the Libranos, with better PR.

I think we're all agreed that it was a complete waste of time and money.

Or as PM Cameron of the UK said of it…..a 'circus'.

  • Loraine Lamontagne

Really? Cameron of the UK said that 'of it' – I have to check this one!

  • OriginalEmily1

After being unimpressed by the expensive 'circus' in Canada he suggested the gathering is held in tandem with another event – such as a Nato or UN summit – to save cash

Yes, I'd like details first, too.
