Forces to regain regal titles

Government to restore historical names for army, navy and air force

Canada’s military is royal once more. In a symbolic move, the Canadian government is renaming the three branches of the armed forces, restoring the “royal” moniker to the air force and navy and tacking ‘Canadian’ onto the army. Defence Minister Peter MacKay told CTV the changes correct a “historical mistake.” The forces lost their regal titles when the once-separate branches were combined in 1968. Under the changes, the air force, now known as Air Command, will become the Royal Canadian Air Force. The army, currently Land Force Command, will become the Canadian Army, and Maritime Command will be once again known as the Royal Canadian Navy.

Awesome news! It’s wonderful to have the Royal Canadian Navy, the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Canadian Army back!

Why bother?  It seems that they are trying to rebrand the forces.

Outstanding news! It was disappointing the Mulroney government didn’t do this when it brought back distinctive service dress.  Still, far better late than never. And a further indication, if one is needed, of how the current PM is the most pro-monarchy PM since Diefenbaker.

In all due respect Mr. MacKay this is a step backward.  What is wrong with the Canadian Navy, and the the Canadian Air Force and the Canadian Army?  Nothing!  We are Canadian and we do not need to be a Royal pain about it!

I suppose you could say that about the RCMP, the RCRs, or any of the hundreds of “Royal” insitutions in this country. There may be a point at which the tiresome republicans are sufficiently numerous to change our constitution (I hope never) but until that day, why be ashamed of who we are?  We are a constitutional monarchy, members of our armed forces swear allegiance to their monarch, the commander in chief, and it is foolish, it seems to me, to pretend anything otherwise. There is nothing more Canadian than loyally serving our Canadian sovereign.

There is nothing more Canadian than loyally serving our British sovereign?
