The Great White City Stadium was built in a remarkable 10 months in an open field in London's then-suburban Shepherds Bush after the 1908 Olympics were shifted to Britain from Italy when the Mount Vesuvius volcano erupted in 1906, devastating Naples and forcing the Italian government to abandon the Olympics to reconstruct the city.
