In a letter dated 1917 from Lord Fisher to “My Dear Winston,” which may or may not be credible, Fisher does the unthinkable and expands the acronym as if the meaning three letters in question was not utterly clear:
“I hear that a new order of Knighthood is on the taps– O.M.G. (Oh! My God!)– Shower it on the Admiralty!!”
Now we know who to blame.
