Canadian women’s soccer team captain Christine Sinclair has been named as the Lou Marsh award winner, becoming Canada’s athlete of the year for 2012.
The award is decided upon by a panel of judges from Canadian sports media outlets.
Sinclair’s award marks the fist time it has been given to any soccer player, and she joins past recipients including Wayne Gretzky, Terry Fox and Bobby Orr.
Sinclair was named the flag carrier for the 2012 Summer Olympics closing ceremonies after leading the Canadian women’s team in a hard-fought semifinal game against the U.S. women. Sinclair scored all three of Canada’s goals in a heartbreaking 3-4 loss.
The team then went on to beat France and took home a bronze medal in the best-ever showing for Canada in women’s soccer.
