CALGARY – A court in Thailand has sentenced a former police officer to 37 1/2 years in prison for the murder of a Calgary man in a northern Thai town more than five years ago.
Leo Del Pinto, who was 25, died after being shot in the face and chest in the town of Pai (PYE) in January 2008.
His friend, Carly Reisig (RYE’-sig) of British Columbia, was also shot in the chest but survived.
The off-duty police officer initially pleaded not guilty to murder with intent and attempted murder, but changed his plea to guilty a couple of weeks ago.
He was already serving a sentence for beating his pregnant wife to death.
Ernie Del Pinto told The Canadian Press that he wishes the sentence could have been closer to 50 years.
